Drop-off day has a way of sneaking up on you. One minute you're casually browsing the camp packing list, and the next you're surrounded by duffles, labeling everything in sight, and wondering if you packed enough socks (You probably didn't. Pack more socks.)
If your heart is doing a little something extra as camp gets closer, you're not alone. Sending your child off for the summer is a big deal, whether it's their first year or their fifth. But the more prepared you are, the better you'll both feel on drop-off day.
This guide is here to walk you through everything: what to pack, how to get organized, what to expect on the day itself, and how to make the goodbye a little easier. Consider it your own pre-camp survival kit.
Start with the Packing List (and Actually Use It)
Before you buy a single thing, get your hands on your camp's official packing list. Camps are specific about what they need and what they don't, and nothing is worse than packing a full wardrobe of items your child isn't allowed to use.
Once you have the list, treat it like a project. Print it out, check things off as you go, and don't rely on memory. Trust us, "I think we got everything" is not the same as "everything is checked off."

Get the Right Gear for the Bunk
A well-prepped bunk is a happy bunk.
Trunks, Duffles & Bags
The trunk or duffle is command central for the whole summer. Most camps require a specific size, so double check before you buy. A soft trunk is a popular choice because it's durable, easy to pack, and fits neatly under the bunk. Pair it with a duffle bag for overflow, a drawstring bag for day trips and activities, and a wet bag for swimsuits and wet gear.

Bedding
Camp bunks are not exactly known for their luxurious mattresses, so getting the bedding right matters more than you'd think. We put together a full guide covering everything from egg crates to comforters to allergy protection.

Bath & Laundry Essentials
Shared bathrooms are a part of camp life, and having the right setup makes all the difference. From shower caddies and shower shoes to towels, toiletries, and laundry bags, we put together a full checklist so nothing gets left behind.

Bunk Gear
Think of bunk gear as the little extras that make the bunk feel like home. A small fan for hot nights, a flashlight for late-night trips to the bathroom, a water bottle they'll actually use, and bug bands for outdoor activities. A small clock is a nice touch too, so they're not relying on a counselor to tell them what time it is.

Label Everything. We Mean Everything.
This one deserves its own section because it cannot be overstated. Clothes, towels, bedding, water bottles, flashlights, bags. If it's going to camp, it needs a name on it.
Iron-on name labels are the easiest way to get it done without writing on everything with a marker. They stay put through the wash, they look neat, and they save you from the heartbreak of a missing favorite sweatshirt.
Pack a Little Comfort From Home
Most camps have a list of approved and prohibited items, but within those guidelines, there's usually room for a few comfort pieces. A familiar pillowcase, a small stuffed animal, a photo of the family, or a favorite book can go a long way for a homesick night. If your child is nervous about being away, let them pick one or two small items to bring that feel like a piece of home.
A fun way to make the experience feel special: let them pick out some of their own camp gear. Whether it's a duffle in their favorite color or a set of stationery for writing letters home, having things that feel personally theirs makes the whole adventure more exciting.
What to Expect on Drop-Off Day
No amount of preparation can fully prepare you for the feeling of drop-off day, and that's okay. Here's a general idea of what to expect, so nothing catches you off guard.
It will be chaotic. There will be a parking lot, a check-in line, a bunk assignment, and about a hundred things happening at once. Stay calm, follow the camp's directions, and trust the process. The staff does this every summer.
Your child may act like they don't need you. This is actually a good sign. It means they feel comfortable and ready. Try not to take it personally.
You may be the one who's more emotional. Also completely normal. Give yourself permission to feel it, then remind yourself that they are going to have an incredible summer.
The goodbye is short for a reason. Most camps encourage a quick, upbeat goodbye rather than a lingering one. A long goodbye can make it harder for everyone. Say your "I love yous," remind them you'll be writing, and let the counselors do their thing. They are very good at transitioning kids into camp mode.
How to Stay Connected While They're Away
Many camps still do things the old-fashioned way: letters, care packages, and visiting day. Some send photos through a camp app, and some do email. Know your camp's communication policy before drop-off, so you know what to expect.
One tip worth following: write the first letter before you even leave drop-off day. Mail it on your way home, and it will likely arrive during their first week, right when they need it most.
When it comes to care packages, the right contents really do make mail call memorable. We've got a full guide on what to send.

One Last Thing Before You Go
Take a breath. You packed the trunk. You labeled the socks. You did the thing. Now it's their turn to do theirs.
Sleepaway camp is one of the most formative experiences a kid can have. The friendships, the independence, all of it adds up to something they'll talk about for years. And when they come home at the end of the summer full of stories and inside jokes and a crazy pile of laundry, you'll know it was absolutely worth it.
